The Archbishop James P. Lyke African American Male Image Awards

Since 1999, St. Felicitas–St. Ailbe Court #181 of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary has proudly hosted the Archbishop James P. Lyke African American Male Image Awards, an inspiring celebration rooted in faith, excellence, and service. This annual event honors the remarkable legacy of Archbishop James P. Lyke, O.F.M., whose life reflected a deep commitment to God, community, and justice. Born in Chicago’s historic Wentworth Gardens in 1939, Archbishop Lyke rose from modest beginnings to become Archbishop of Atlanta, making history as the highest-ranking African American Catholic clergyman of his time. His ministry championed education, empowerment, and inclusion, always uplifting those on the margins and calling others to embrace faith in action. Archbishop Lyke’s devotion to the African American Catholic community, his courage to lead, and his unwavering belief in the potential of young people continue to light the path for generations to come.

Through this sacred and celebratory tradition, Court #181 keeps alive the archbishop’s vision of a Church and community rooted in love, service, and opportunity. The Image Awards remind us that leadership is not measured by titles or accolades, but by one’s willingness to serve others with humility, faith, and compassion. Each year, the event becomes more than an award ceremony, it becomes a living testament to what it means to follow Christ’s example and to honor the greatness found within our own communities.

Honoring Excellence, Leadership, and Service
For over THREE DECADES, the Archbishop James P. Lyke African American Male Image Awards have stood as a beacon of hope and a powerful expression of community pride.

The event celebrates African American men who embody the highest ideals of leadership, Christian values, and selfless service. These honorees, leaders in faith, education, business, and civic life, serve as role models who demonstrate that greatness is found in giving back, lifting others, and living with integrity. Each awardee reflects the enduring mission of Archbishop Lyke: to build a future where faith transforms lives, education opens doors, and service strengthens communities.

Beyond honoring excellence, the Image Awards directly invest in the next generation. Through the generosity of sponsors, donors, and community partners, Court #181 has awarded more than $146,000 in scholarships to deserving high school seniors and contributed over $200,000 to support African American Catholic education. Each scholarship given represents a seed of hope planted in the heart of a young person striving to reach their God-given potential.

As we prepare to celebrate the 32nd Archbishop James P. Lyke African American Male Image Awards, we not only honor the achievements of distinguished men but also recommit ourselves to Archbishop Lyke’s vision, to educate, to empower, and to uplift the African American community through faith, unity, and love.
